Back in the day, documentaries tended to last 90 minutes and be very earnest. The emergence of streaming service has given rise to a new genre--the docuseries--that stretches over multiple episodes. Some of the most bingeworthy docuseries (and documentaries) contain so many plot twists and eccentric characters that it's hard to believe they are true. The poster for Tiger King nails the spirit of these series--"The wildest story you'll never believe."
Bill Simmons said you get a great documentary when "you pick a story that hasn’t been fully explored yet, you throw yourself into it and you make it sing," and these documentaries sing by pairing great directors with passion projects about sports history. As a bonus, we've thrown in some other ESPN documentaries.
